Generative AI

Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI or GenAI) refers to systems that can create new content, such as text, images, music, or other digital content in response to prompts provided by its user. Generative AI models are trained on large datasets and use this knowledge to generate outputs that mimic or draw inspiration from their training examples.

Public Generative AI tools offer exciting possibilities for our learning, teaching, work, and personal lives. Some common tools in use at VCU are Google Gemini, Microsoft CoPilot, Adobe Firefly, etc. These systems can generate content, provide insights, summarize, and help streamline our tasks. For a full list of VCU approved tools available for use review our AI Tools and Technologies page.

Guidelines for the use of generative AI tools

It is crucial to exercise caution when using generative AI. The following guidelines are about using and purchasing generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools at VCU. Note that these guidelines do not create a new university policy. Instead, they use existing university policies and standards. We welcome your feedback and will work to continually update our guidelines as things change.
