VCU Mobile Reimagined

To ensure we continue to provide the best possible mobile experience, we are undertaking a complete redesign and refocus of our native iOS and Android "VCU Mobile" application. This initiative is driven by the need to modernize the platform, enhance performance, and optimize functionality for our students and faculty. The redesigned application will feature a contemporary user interface, improved navigation, and a streamlined user experience. 

This comprehensive overhaul will not only address the limitations of the existing application but also introduce new features and capabilities to better serve the evolving needs of our clients. 

When will the new VCU Mobile release on iOS and Android App Store? 

We're taking a phased approach to rolling out our redesigned application, beginning with a significant enhancement of the student experience. This allows us to prioritize key functionalities and gather valuable feedback through a continuous release strategy.  Our redesign is informed by close collaboration with student interns, the STAC (Student Technology Advisory Committee), and survey feedback from student volunteers, ensuring it truly reflects the needs of our students.

Students can expect a dramatically improved interface with dynamic, personalized information readily available, including class schedules, advisor appointments, holds, and more.  Beyond these enhancements, we're refining our approach to student information, moving from a generalized view to one that recognizes and supports the unique identities of each VCU student.  By leveraging existing programs like the "You First at VCU First-Generation Student Success and Research Center," we aim to meet students where they are and help them get where they want to be.

This is just the first step in delivering a seamless transition and a truly optimized mobile experience for everybody at VCU.  Following the student experience, we will be focusing on delivering enhanced experiences for guests, alumni, faculty and staff, and VCUarts Qatar, with dedicated features and functionalities tailored to their specific needs. The substantial completion of the newly redesigned student experience is expected in 2025, with subsequent releases for other target audiences to follow.

Who is working on the project?

The redesign of the VCU Mobile application is a collaborative effort, spearheaded by Technology Services' Web Services team. While the platform is vendor-managed, it is powered by a robust network of microservices developed in-house to ensure adaptability and responsiveness to our evolving needs. Our dedicated project team comprises senior engineers, talented student interns, and experienced product owners and managers. However, this transformative initiative extends beyond Web Services, requiring the collective expertise and support of departments across the university to truly create a best-in-class mobile experience for our diverse community.
